Indirect Question word การเปลี่ยนประโยคคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย Question Word ให้ถือหลักดังนี้ เปลี่ยน say, said เป็น ask ,asked ,inquired, inquired of ,wondered ,wanted to know etc. 2. ใช้ Question Word เป็นคำเชื่อมแทน that 3. เปลี่ยนรูปแบบประโยคคำถาม เรียงลำดับคำในประโยคคำถามใหม่ให้กลาย เป็นประโยคบอกเล่า 4. การเปลี่ยน Tense ถือหลักเช่นเดียวกับ Indirect Statements

ในประโยคที่มี Question words เช่น Who = ใคร what = อะไร when = เมื่อไร Where = ที่ไหน why = ทำไม how = อย่างไร Which = อันใด สิ่งใด whose = ของใคร whom = ใคร (กรรม) *อยู่ในเครื่องหมายคำพูด ให้ใช้ wh word นั้นเชื่อมประโยคแทน if หรือ whether แล้วเรียงประโยคเสียใหม่แบบบอกเล่าส่วนท้ายประโยคไม่ต้องใส่ ?

หลักการเปลี่ยน Direct เป็น Indirect Question ถ้ากริยาในประโยคนำเป็นอดีต กริยาในประโยคตามจะเปลี่ยนดังนี้ Direct Indirect Present simple Present continuous Present perfect Past simple Will Shall Can may เปลี่ยนเป็น Past continuous Past perfect Past perfect(อดีตยิ่งขึ้น) Would Should Could might

ตัวอย่างประโยคคำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย Question word Direct Question Indirect Question She said to me, “What are you going to do today?” หล่อนพูดกับผมว่า “คุณกำลังจะทำอะไรในวันนี้?” She asked me what I was going to do that day. หล่อนถามผมว่าผมกำลังจะทำอะไรในวันนั้น He said to me, “Where do you live?” เขาถามฉันว่า “คุณอาศัยอยู่ที่ไหน?” He asked me where I lived. เขาถามฉันว่าฉันอาศัยอยู่ที่ไหน

Jim said to her, “How long will you stay here?” จิมพูดกับหล่อนว่า “คุณจะพักอยู่ที่นี่นานเท่าไร?” Jim asked her how long she would stay there. จิมถามหล่อนว่าหล่อนจะพักอยู่ที่นั่นนานเท่าไร He said, “Who stole my money?” เขาพูดว่า “ใครขโมยเงินของเขา?” He asked who had stolen his money. เขาพูดว่าใครขโมยเงินของเขา
