(student's real) life-based learning Learning Institute for Everyone (LIFE) has adapted Andragogy (Knowles, 1980) and call it (student's real) life-based learning. The andragogical/life-based model involves the change of the role of the teacher as facilitator rather than knowledge provider.)

The Andragogical Model (Knowles 1973, 1980, 2005)

The Adult Learners in the Study A heterogenous class of 29 mature adults with job skills, ages ranging from 20-69. Occupations: Owners of fruit (coconut/ banana/ lychees ) (50%) Enterpreneurs: Owners of deep-sea fishery business/ cable TV network/ construction firm (concrete piling) / air-conditioning/ coconut oil production/ Buddha images moulding/ Thai pudding business/ Traditional massage Local politicians: TAO / PAO /(as members, secretary, Vice-President,Advisor and etc)

The Research Questions (1) Can Andragogy which is a western concept be applied to the teaching of English to Thai EFL adult learners ? (2) What are the learner’s attitudes towards Andragogical model or life-based learning?

The Research Instruments 1) Analysis of audio transcripts of 3 EFL lessons (9 hours) 2) Teacher's Diary : Reflection-in-action after the lessons

The Findings : RQ 1: Can Andragogy as a western concept be applied to a Thai situation ? Lesson plan by teacher (thought this would work well) – Self-introduction-greetings in English- Your Hometown Samut Songkram- google-wikipedia-youtube -languages related to tourism. One Warm-up Question “What do you want 'to know' or 'to say' in English? You can ask me in Thai or English. So begins the lesson that was steered by the learner's, the learners'agenda

Learners' Contribution: Applicability of Andragogy to the Thai context How can I say 'Khon Thai Mai Chai Khi Kha Farang' in English? What's the difference between customs and customers? How about commission? “I'm in the 'khanom krok' / 'nuad paen Thai' / 'pla-too' / 'law- pra' / 'pramong-nam-luek'/ business. What is it in English? I'm 'tee-pruk-sa-nayok-aw-baw-jaw / 'rong-pratan-aw-baw-taw'. What is it in English?

From the Teacher's Diary/ Journal http://www. gotoknow น.ศ.รุมยิงคำถามใส่ดิฉันมากมาย จนจัดคิวแทบไม่ทัน ส่วนใหญ่จะขอให้บอกประโยคในภาษาอังกฤษที่ อยากพูดกับต่างชาติ ที่บางคนอัดอั้นมานาน เช่น "เราไม่ใช่เมืองอาณานิคมของใคร" (We have never been colonized.) (We're not your colony.) "เราไม่ใช่ขี้ข้าของ คุณ" (ต้องสอน colony-colonize /ความแตกต่างระหว่าง servant-slave) / อยากรู้ ว่าขนมครก-ขนมสอดไส้-ภาษาอังกฤษ เรียกว่าอะไร / ไม่เข้าใจความหมายของ life ตัวเล็กและ LIFE ตัวใหญ่ซึ่งเป็นชื่อย่อ ม.ชีวิต / อยากรู้ว่านวดแผนไทยภาษาอังกฤษเรียกว่าอะไร เป็นต้น

เมื่อดิฉันค่อยๆตั้งหลัก ช่วยคิดเฉลยกับพวกเขาทำให้เขาเห็นว่า ภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ยากอย่างที่คิด เพราะ ขนมครก-ขนมสอดไส้เป็นขนมไทย ฝรั่งไม่รู้จัก จึงไม่มีศัพท์อังกฤษตรงเป๊ะสำหรับขนมครก-ขนมสอดไส้ เราคนไทยมีสิทธิ์พูดทับศัพท์ แล้วค่อยอธิบายว่าอาจเปรียบได้กับ Thai pudding นศ.ที่ทำธุรกิจขนมครกดังของจังหวัด ก็เสนอคำว่า coconut pancake ดิฉันบอกว่า ใช่เลย นศ.รู้ศัพท์มากกว่าที่เราคิด หากว่าเป็นสิ่งที่เขาอยากรู้ อยากจำ อยากพูด

Teacher changed the course of the lesson to accommodate learner's specific needs: their professions ดิฉันจึงได้คิดว่า แม้ภาษาพวกเขายังไม่แข็งแรง แต่พวกเขามี exposure พอสมควรในภาษาอังกฤษ หากไม่ empower ให้เห็นศักยภาพตนเอง ก็ อาจเกิดปมด้อยฝังลึก พาลไม่พูด และเกลียดไปเลย ทั้งๆ ที่มีความอยากจะ เรียนรู้ เมื่อฉุกใจได้คิด  ขณะนั้นจึงไม่อยากเสีย momentum ต้องรีบปรับ การสอนทันที โดยให้เขาแบ่งกลุ่มคุยแนะนำอาชีพของตน ใน ภาษาไทย แต่ช่วยคิดศัพท์อาชีพที่อยากรู้    เพื่อให้ได้เรียน ในสิ่งที่เขาอยากรู้แล้วเขียนลง flip chart เพื่อนำเสนอ ในภาคบ่าย

Implications of Learners' Questions 'Khon Thai Mai Chai Khi Kha Farang'(likely negative / personal bias towards English and native speakers of English) customs /customers / commission (words picked up from contacts export/import business) (commission-under the table money-tea money) 'khanom krok'(dictionary-Thai pudding)(real life use-coconut pancake) 'maw-nuad'(traditional Thai massage therapists-more respect / pride for the profession) (not a masseuse/massage parlour girl)

Even during a pot-luck lunch break, they didn't give me a break but kept asking how to say the different dishes in English Questions Ss asked about food during lunch assorted vegetable hot soup แกงเลียง · omelette with green pepper · stir-fried squid with chilly paste ·hot salad pomelo hot salad · steamed mackerel ( wikipedia Samut Songkram mackerel ) ·

Learners are empowered to take pride in their native language and cultural heritage. คำถาม เกี่ยวกับ ชื่ออาหารไทย ดิฉันก็บอกเขาตรงว่า หลายครั้งดิฉันก็มั่ว ด้นไป เพราะ เป็นอาหารไทยเรา เราต้องรู้ดีกว่าฝรั่ง เดื๋ยวนี้คำไทยก็โด่งดัง เช่น tuk-tuk / tom-yam-kung/ เพราะฝรั่งไม่มี This is nam prik atoo. It's chilli paste with fish like mackerel or platoo.

Conclusion and Recommendations Shy? / soft-spoken/ 'krengjai'/ quiet / dumb/ lazy / 'Baan-nok' Learners are happy, proud, confident, eager to learn, enthusiastic, positive toward learning English, motivated to pursue life-long learning in English.' chow-suan-ชาวสวน'(misunderstood by Ss as the equivalent of farmer/ gardener-คนสวน) (an orchard owner-proposed by T.)

Learners' evaluating T. : one senior learner came to me and said I passed the test, a very difficult test, an 'impromtu' lesson. They've learned to accept that teachers don't know everything. But teachers know how to find the information. หลายๆครั้งเกือบตกม้าตาย  นศ. ที่อาวุโสหน่อยมาบอกด้วยความปรานี ตอน เลิกเรียนแล้วว่า นึกห่วงกลัวอาจารย์จะตกม้าตายจนแต้มตอบปัญหาไม่ได้ แต่ ให้กำลังใจว่าดิฉันสอบผ่าน ดิฉันต้องสารภาพว่า ครูไม่ได้เก่งทุกอย่าง  ฝรั่งก็ไม่ได้เก่งทุกอย่าง  เช่น ดิฉัน บอกว่าขอเช็คอาชีพอัดกาบมะพร้าวเพื่อทำเครื่องปลูกต้นไม้  นึกไม่ออก ทันที ขอติดไว้ก่อน
