Why do we have to conduct this research? H. pylori screening methods have not been included in the UHC benefit package, In 2011, The research was submitted by researchers from health academics groups

Objectives To explore the cost-effectiveness of five different screening methods for H. pylori infection: endoscopic gastric biopsy and rapid urease test (RUT) + Histology (If RUT is negative) ; urea breath test (UBT); serology; stool polymerase chain reaction (PCR); and therapeutic diagnosis

Conclusions 1. ยึดตามแนวทางปฏิบัติของสมาคมแพทย์ระบบทางเดินอาหารแห่งประเทศไทยในหน่วยบริการที่มีความพร้อมในการตรวจทางห้องปฏิบัติการโดยเฉพาะ RUT แต่ในโรงพยาบาลที่ไม่มีอุปกรณ์ในการตรวจวินิจฉัยเชื้อ H. pylori ก็สามารถใช้วิธี therapeutic diagnosis ในการรักษาผู้ป่วยที่มีอาการ dyspepsia ซึ่งไม่ตอบสนองต่อการได้รับยาลดกรดและยารักษาแผลในกระเพาะอาหารได้เลย แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม การรักษาด้วยวิธี therapeutic diagnosis นี้อาจต้องคำนึงถึงผลข้างเคียงที่อาจทำให้เกิดภาวะเชื้อดื้อยามากขึ้นในอนาคตด้วย 2. ลดต้นทุนในการตรวจวิเคราะห์เชื้อ H. pylori โดยเฉพาะ RUT ซึ่งถูกแนะนำให้เป็น gold standard ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้การตรวจวินิจฉัยทางห้องปฏิบัติการก่อนการให้การรักษามีความคุ้มค่าทางเศรษฐศาสตร์มากขึ้น นอกจากนี้ มีความจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งในการเพิ่มจำนวนและศักยภาพของห้องปฏิบัติการในระดับภูมิภาค เพื่อตรวจวินิจฉัยการติดเชื้อ H pylori เพิ่มมากขึ้นด้วย
