Suffixes Do you want to improve your vocabulary bank? Try this vocabulary learning strategy No.6! How to use this learning record Step 1: Choose any kind of reading texts e.g. newspapers, magazines, websites etc. you enjoy reading. You don’t need to read the whole text-just skim through it. Step 2: When you find interesting words and you would like to explore their formation by ‘suffixes’, mark them. Step 3: Use any kind of dictionary, including online ones, to explore the chosen words. It is worth exploring your chosen words using many sources. Step 4: Write them down in the corresponding word formation blanks of your learning record. Suggestions: Because of advancements in technology, new formations of words are always developing. Don’t be surprised if you find a word which has an acceptable suffix but is not included in a dictionary! Suffixes Suffix คืออะไร? Suffix คือ ส่วนที่มาต่อท้ายคำ เมื่อเพิ่ม Suffix ไปในคำก็จะเกิดคำใหม่ขึ้น โดยเป็นคำที่มีหน้าที่ของคำแตกต่างออกไป Suffix ที่พบบ่อยได้แก่ -ation, -ition, -ment,-hood, -ness, -ence, -ance, -ty, -ity เติมท้ายคำแล้ว เกิดเป็นคำนาม -able, -ible, -ful, -less, -en, -ic, -ical, -itive, -al, -ar, -ious , -y เติมท้ายคำแล้วเกิดเป็นคำคุณศัพท์ -ate, -ify, -en, -ize when added form verbs. -y เติมท้ายคำแล้วเกิดเป็นคำวิเศษณ์ ลองดูตัวอย่างการเปลี่ยนหน้าที่ของคำต่อไปนี้ กริยา. เป็น วิเศษณ์. : clear – clearly คุณศัพท์ เป็น นาม.: sick – sickness กริยา เป็น นาม: agree – agreement นาม เป็น นาม: friend – friendship นาม เป็น นาม: nation – national What is a ‘suffix’? A ‘suffix’ is a word ending. When suffixes are added to words, new words are formed with a different function. Common suffixes are as follows: -ation, -ition, -ment,-hood, -ness, -ence, -ance, -ty, -ity when added form nouns. -able, -ible, -ful, -less, -en, -ic, -ical, -itive, -al, -ar -ious , -y when added form adjectives. -ate, -ify, -en, -ize when added form verbs. -y when added form adverbs. Why learn suffixes? Learning vocabulary does not involve only remembering new words, but also the ability to analyze how they are formed. Exploring suffixes will make you become more familiar with changes of words and be able to apply them later with new contexts!
