ผลประโยชน์แอบแฝงมหาศาลด้านโทรคมนาคมอีกหนึ่งสาเหตุในการเร่งแปรรูป กฟผ. ในระบบสายส่งไฟฟ้าแรงสูงของ กฟผ. ไม่ว่าจะเป็น 230 KV, 500 KV หรือ 115 KV สายส่งนี้สอดไส้ตรงแกน กลางด้วยใยแก้วนำแสงหรือที่เรียกว่าไฟเบอร์ออฟติคส์ (fiber optics) หรือออฟติเคิลไฟเบอร์ (optical fiber) ซึ่งสามารถส่งสัญญาณได้จำนวนมหาศาล ใครก็ตามที่เป็นเจ้าของโครงข่าย กฟผ. บวก กฟน. บวก กฟภ. นี้ก็คือคนที่จะเป็นเจ้าของโครงข่ายโทรคมนาคม ที่สมบูรณ์ที่สุดของประเทศ สายส่งของ กฟผ. เป็นแค่สายหลัก หรือ "trunk line" หรือ "backbone" เท่านั้น จึงยังไม่ถึงบ้านแต่ถ้าเราผนวกกับสายซึ่งเป็นสาย ทองแดงของการไฟฟ้านครหลวงและการไฟฟ้าส่วนภูมิภาคเข้าไปก็จะถึง ทุกบ้านช่อง รวม 15 ล้านครัวเรือน ต่อไปสายทองแดงจะไม่เพียงนำกระแสไฟฟ้า เท่านั้นยังสามารถที่จะนำสัญญาณโทรศัพท์ สัญญาณอินเตอร์เน็ตเข้ามา ด้วย อันนี้เราเรียกว่า BPL หรือชื่อเต็มว่า "Broadband over Power Line" หรือ "Power Line Communication"
