กำหนดหัวเรื่อง (Subject Headings) ใช้โปรแกรมห้องสมุดอัตโนมัติ สร้างฐานข้อมูล (Databases) ตรวจสอบจาก Websites คู่มือ (LC / DC / ) AACRII งานเทคนิคเตรียมวัสดุ

แผนการจัดหมู่มีมากกว่า 10 ระบบ ที่นิยมแผร่หลายทั่วโลก คือ และ DC LC แผนการจัดหมู่วัสดุห้องสมุด เป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการจัดทรัพยากรทางวิชาเป็นหลัก ค้นหาง่าย เป็นสากล

6 ระบบการจัดหมู่มีความพยายามคิดสร้างกันมากหลายระบบ ระบบที่นิยมใช้แพร่หลายเป็นระบบที่ยึดเนื้อหา หรือเนื้อเรื่อง หรือประเด็นสำคัญของเนื้อหาทั้งหมด แล้วใช้สัญลักษณ์ ซึ่งอาจเป็นตัวอักษร ( LC ) หรือตัวเลข ( DC ) แทนเนื้อหาดังกล่าว ระบบการจัดหมู่จึงเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญสำหรับผู้ประกอบอาชีพบรรณารักษศาสตร์ หรือนักสารสนเทศ

ทุกระบบของการจัดหมู่ ประกอบด้วย สัญลักษณ์ (ตัวอักษร หรือตัวเลข ) กับความหมายสั้น ๆ เพื่อเป็นแนวทางให้บรรณารักษ์ใช้เทียบกับเนื้อหาที่ได้ จากการอ่าน สรุป หรือการวิเคราะห์วัสดุห้องสมุดเท่านั้น

นิยมใช้กับห้องสมุด ขนาดใหญ่ มีหนังสือ จำนวนล้านเล่มขึ้นไป ใช้อักษรอังกฤษ (ตัวใหญ่) แทนเนื้อหา อักษรที่สงวนไว้ไม่นำมาใช้คือ I O W X และ Y แบ่งเนื้อหาออกเป็น สาขาวิชาใหญ่ แต่ใช้อักษรทั้งหมด 21 ตัว
