Most of the time, DNA exists in the form of chromatin ( โครมาทิน ). Chromatin is DNA wrapped around proteins called histones ( ฮีสโตน ). Left: An electron microscope image of DNA wrapped around histones.

During the cell’s life, DNA replication occurs. Then, when the time comes for a cell to divide into two new cells, the chromatin starts to wrap up into structures called chromosomes ( โครโมโซม ). For human body cells, our DNA is actually arranged into 46 chromosomes.
Humans have 46 chromosomes: 23 from each biological parent.
A karyotype ( คาริโอไทป์ ) is an image of all your homologous ( โครโมโซมคล้ายคลึงกัน ) pairs of chromosomes arranged from largest to smallest and with your sex chromosomes at the end.
