1. Indefinite Articles ได้แก่ a, an
1. a, an ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่ไม่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจงว่าเป็น อันไหน สิ่งไหน ที่ไหน คำนามนับได้ที่เป็นเอกพจน์ (singular) 2. ถ้ามีอักษรขึ้นต้นคำนามเป็นพยัญชนะ จะใช้ a นำหน้า เช่น a man, a dog, a table, a house หมายเหตุ แต่หากคำนามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ h จะไม่ออกเสียง แต่ออกเสียงสระตัวถัดไป จะใช้ an นำหน้า เช่น an hour, an honour 3. คำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ (singular) ถ้ามีอักษรขึ้นต้นคำนามเป็นสระ ( a, e, i, o, u) จะใช้ an นำหน้า เช่น an ox, an egg, an umbrella, an ant แต่หากคำนามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ 4. แต่ออกเสียงเป็นพยัญชนะ จะใช้ a นำหน้า เช่น a university, a union

ข้อสังเกต An apple A red apple A pencil An orange pencil คำนามเอกพจน์ (singular) เมื่อคำนามนำหน้าด้วยคำคุณศัพท์ (adjective) คือ คำขยายคำนาม การจะเลือกใช้ a หรือ an นำหน้า ให้ดูที่คำคุณศัพท์ที่ขยาย ถ้าคำคุณศัพท์นั้นขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ จะใช้ an นำหน้า ถ้าขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ จะใช้ a นำหน้า ตามข้อสังเกตข้างบน

She is a nurse. I am a Buddhist. คำนามที่เกี่ยวกับอาการของโรคภัยไข้เจ็บ เช่น a cold เป็นหวัด a headache ปวดศีรษะ a fever เป็นไข้ an earache ปวดหู คำนามที่บอกจำนวน หรือปริมาณของสิ่งต่าง ๆ เช่น a bag หนึ่งถุง a dozen หนึ่งโหล

ใช้นำหน้าคำนามที่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง การใช้ the - นำหน้าคำนามที่กล่าวถึงเป็นครั้งที่ 2 เช่น I have a notebook. The notebook is in my backpack. - นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นสิ่งเดียวในโลก เช่น the sun, the earth, the moon, the sky, the east, the west, etc. - นำหน้าชื่อครอบครัว เช่น The Sinchalern likes to play music. - นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นชื่อเครื่องดนตรี เช่น the violin, the guitar, the piano, etc.

- นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นชื่อเฉพาะและชื่อทางภูมิศาสตร์ ได้แก่ แม่น้ำ ทะเล มหาสมุทร เช่น the Choa Phraya River, the Pacific Ocean, the Philippines, etc. - นำหน้าชื่อประเทศบางประเทศ (ในวงเล็บคือชื่อไม่เป็นทางการ) เช่น The People’s Republic of China. (China) The Republic of the Philippines (The Philippines) The Kingdom of the Netherlands (The Netherlands) The United Kingdom (England) The United State of America (America)

- นำหน้าคำนามที่เป็นสถานที่สำคัญ เช่น พิพิธภัณฑ์ ชื่อธนาคาร โรงแรม ภัตตาคาร หนังสือพิมพ์
เช่น the National Museum, the Oriental Hotel, the Bangkok Post, the Thai Military Bank, etc. - นำหน้าคำนามที่บอกลำดับที่ เช่น the first, the second, the fifth, etc. - นำหน้าคำนามที่บอกช่วงเวลา เช่น the morning, the afternoon, the evening, etc.

หมายเหตุ คำนามที่ไม่ใช้ “Article”
1. คำนามที่นับไม่ได้ เช่น Water is good for health. 2. คำนามชื่ออาหารมื้อต่าง ๆ เช่น I have dinner at restaurant. 3. คำนามชื่อกีฬาประเภทต่าง ๆ เช่น He likes to play football, badminton, and volleyball. 4. คำนามชื่อวัน เดือน ฤดู และวันสำคัญต่าง ๆ เช่น Monday, Sunday, January, Summer, Valentine’s Day

5. คำนามชื่อเฉพาะของคน สัตว์ ประเทศ เมือง โรงเรียน มหาวิทยาลัย เป็นต้น เช่น Jane, Mr. Smith, Asia, Thailand, London, Oxford University 6. คำนามชื่อวิชาต่าง ๆ และชื่อภาษา เช่น Art, Music, History, French, English, Thai
