Jonathan Turner แบ่งทฤษฎีสังคมวิทยาออกเป็นสำนักคิด (schools) 4 สำนักคิด คือ ทฤษฎีโครงสร้างหน้าที่นิยม (Structural-functional Theory) ทฤษฎีขัดแย้ง (Conflict Theory) ทฤษฎีปริวรรต (Exchange Theory) ทฤษฎีการกระทำระหว่างกันโดยใช้สัญลักษณ์ (Symbolic interactionism) สำนักคิดที่กำลังก่อสร้างตัวอีกสำนักหนึ่ง คือ ปรากฏการณ์นิยม (Phenomenology)

Applying Conflict Theory Conflict theory and its variants are used by many sociologists today to study a wide range of social problems. Examples include: The Critical View on Global Capitalism . In the Democratic Republic of Congo around 1,500 people die every day over fighting to control the lucrative trade in minerals. Cassiterite and coltan ore is used in the production of cell phones, DVD's and computers by the world's most familiar brands. Women and children form the majority of so called artisanal miners who work in cramped dangerous tunnels using shovels or their bare hands to extract rocks containing the minerals. Many are injured or killed by collapsing mine shafts. Young boys emerge from a tunnel at a mine in the Szibira district of South Kivu, Congo.

มนุษย์สร้างความสัมพันธ์ผ่านระบบสัญลักษณ์ (Symbols) สัญลักษณ์ที่สาคัญที่สุด คือ ภาษาสัญลักษณ์อาจเป็นวัตถุ เหตุการณ์ หรือ การกระทาจากวัตถุและเหตุการณ์นั้น เช่น เมื่อพูดถึง “เก้าอี้” อาจหมายถึง ที่นั่ง การนั่ง ท่านั่ง หรือ การครอบครองตาแหน่งสัญลักษณ์ หมายถึง วิธีการที่มนุษย์ปฏิสัมพันธ์อย่างมีความหมายกับธรรมชาติและบริบททางสังคม สัญลักษณ์ไม่ใช่สัญชาตญาณ แต่เป็นสิ่งที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้นมาถ้าไม่มีสัญลักษณ์ มนุษย์จะมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กันไม่ได้และจะไม่มี “สังคม” เกิดขึ้นมา
