ประวัติย่อของวิชาเซต
ในทางคณิตศาสตร์ จะถือว่า “เซต” เป็น “มูลฐาน” (fundamental) ทั้งนี้เพราะว่าทฤษฎีบทต่าง ๆ ของคณิตศาสตร์ ล้วนมีเซตเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้อง เป็นพื้นฐานแทบทั้งสิ้น

เซตเริ่มมีที่มามาจากนักคณิตศาสตร์ชาวเยอรมัน ชื่อ เกอร์ก คันทอร์ (Georg antor)
ค.ศ เป็นผู้ริเริ่มใช้คำว่าเซต ต่อจากนั้นนักคณิตศาสตร์จึงใช้คำนี้อย่างแพร่หลาย

The meaning of sets “เซต” เป็นคำ “อนิยาม” (undefined term) หมายถึง คำที่ต้องยอมรับกันในเบื้องต้นว่า ไม่สามารถให้ความหมายที่รัดกุมได้ Cantor เคยอธิบายอย่างง่าย ๆ เพื่อความเข้าใจเบื้องต้นว่า “เซต” คือ กลุ่มของสิ่งของหรือจินตนาการ ซึ่งมีสมบัติบางประการคล้ายกัน และสิ่งของ ดังกล่าวนั้นเรียกว่า สมาชิกของเซต
