1 MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR AND DEFORMATION MECHANISM OF ROCKS

(Ideal Materials)
Ideal materials หมายถึง Homogeneous and isotropic materials Elastic Elasticoviscous Elasticoplastic Viscoelastic Plastic Plasticoviscous Viscous Behaviors of Ideal Materials L. Archwichai

3 1. Elastic (Hookean) Behavior
เมื่ออยู่ภายใต้ stress วัตถุจะเกิด strain แบบทันทีทันใด เมื่อ applied stress หายไป strain จะหายไปด้วย และ strain ที่เกิดขึ้นจะเป็นสัดส่วนโดยตรงกับ applied stress Ds = E De Stress (s) E = Young’s Modulus s = Compressive or tensile stress e = linear strain Spring Ds De t = G g Strain (e) G = Shear Modulus t = Shear stress g = shear strain

4 Dilation โดย hydrostatic stress หรือ mean stresss
s = K D V/ V K = Bulk Modulus s = Hydrostatic or mean stress D V / V = Volumetric strain ea el ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง elastic moduli E, G และ K E = 2 (1+n) G = 3 (1-2n) K n = Poisson’s ratio = el / ea = lateral strain / axial strain n = for hard rock n = for saturated clay

5 2. Plastic (St. Venant) Behavior
Stress (s) Sliding block “Permanent strain” Yield point Strain (e)

6 3. Elasticoplastic Behavior
วัตถุจะเกิด elastic strain เมื่อ applied stress ต่ำกว่า yield stress (จุด b บน stress-strain curve) และจะเกิด plastic strain เมื่อ applied stress สูงกว่า yield stress Stress (s) b Sliding block Spring a a = Proportional limit b = Yield point a - b = Anelastic behavior Strain (e) Anelastic behavior = Time-deoendent elastic strain

7 4. Viscous Behavior วัตถุจะเกิดการไหล (flow) ภายใต้ applied stress การไหลจะช้าหรือเร็ว ขึ้นกับความต้านทานภายในของวัตถุ เรียกว่า ความหนืด (viscosity) ของวัตถุ ปกติเป็นพฤติกรรมของของไหล (fluid) แต่ของแข็งอาจไหลได้ภายใต้สภาพที่มีความดันและอุณหภูมิสูง หรือ เกิดความเครียดในอัตราที่ช้ามาก ๆ Shear stress (t) h = dt / (d2e /d t2) Strain (e) Non-Newtonian fluid dt Newtonian fluid Dashpot d(de/dt) t = h eฐ t = Shear stress (dyne/cm2) h = Viscosity (poise = dyne.sec/cm2) eฐ = Strain rate (sec-1) time (t) Strain rate (eฐ) Newtonian fluid: water Non-Newtonian fluid: polymer, crystalline materials

8 5. Elasticoviscous (Maxwell) Behavior
วัตถุจะเกิด elastic strain ภายใต้ elastic limit และจะเกิด permanent strain อย่างต่อเนื่อง ภายใต้ applied stress ที่คงที่และมีค่าน้อยกว่า yield stress ปรากฏการณ์ที่วัตถุแสดง viscous behavior โดย stress คงที่ เรียกว่า “Creep” วัตถุเหล่านี้ ได้แก่ wax, tar Spring Strain (e) Dashpot Accelerating creep Steady-state creep Transient creep et = s/E + s t / h et = Total strain s = Applied stress time (t) E = Young’s modulus h = Viscosity t = Time

9 6. Viscoelastic (Kelvin-Voight) Behavior
วัตถุจะเกิด elastic strain แต่ใช้เวลาในการเกิดและการคืนตัว ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง stress-strain เป็นแบบ non-linear (exponential) กับเวลา เรียกว่า “Anelastic behavior” Strain (e) e = et Spring Loading Unloading Dashpot time (t)

10 7. Plasticoviscous (Bingham) Behavior
Stress (s) Strain Hardening Sliding Block Dashpot Strain (e) Strain (e) Viscous strain Plastic strain Time (t)

11 4.2 Brittle and Ductile Behaviors of Rocks
Stress (s) Ductile failure Fracturing Brittle failure Fracturing 5 10 Strain (e)

12 4.3 Brittle Failure of Rocks
Compressive strength Shear strength Tensile strength

13 Failure Criteria (1) Coulomb-Navier Criterion
s1 t (sq, tq) f Failure Envelop sq s3 s3 c tq 2q s3 s1 s q s1 t = Shear strength c = Cohesive strength s = Normal stress f = Angle 0f internal friction t = c + s tan f 1 s1 + s3 2 + s1 - s3 cos 2q 2 2 sq = 3 s1 - s3 sin 2q 2 tq =

15 d (sin 2q / 2 - cos2q tan f ) = 0 dq cos 2q sin q cos q tan f = 0 s1 cos 2q = - tan f sin 2q cot 2q = cot (900 + f) a s3 s3 q 2q = f q = f/ 2 q a = f/ 2 (a = q) s1

17 4.2 Experimental Deformation of Rocks

23 4.5 Deformation Mechanism of Rocks

Sandstone shortened 40% at 5 kbr C.P., 1 kbar pore pressure, and 500 oC. Gouge zone

29 Mechanical twinning Translation gliding

31 Partial dynamic recrystallization of strained quartz grains in quartzite (Upper Left & Upper Right)
Complete dynamic recrystallization of strained quartz grains in quartzite

32 Static Recrystallization (Annealing)
