HELLOO YODA…!! What is the Thesis Advisor Person who Advise you from the first steps on the campus Help you to “Discover” a thesis topic Help you choose your thesis committee Help you choose much needed courses for your research work Read your thesis drafts and edit them..!! Be your Moral Supporter Champion you against your detractor Help you to get your first paper published Cheer for you (YOU ARE DREAMY) Part parent and spiritual guide

16 Bad Advisor: the BIG BAD Wolf
HELLOO YODA…!! Bad Advisor: the BIG BAD Wolf Steel student data and publish without telling or your name on it Hungry for tenure; your name is not included Putting off reading of your thesis proposal on purpose

19 What is the THESIS?

20 What is THESIS?* an original contribution to knowledge
Naked Truth..!! What is THESIS?* an original contribution to knowledge The thesis is a formal document: proof of your original contribution to knowledge identification a worthwhile problem or question which has not been previously answered Solutions of the problem or answers to the question. Including: “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

21 What is THESIS?* an original contribution to knowledge
Naked Truth..!! What is THESIS?* an original contribution to knowledge Uncover new facts or principles Suggest relationships once were unrecognized Challenge existing truth or assumptions Give new insights into little understood phenomena Suggest new interpretations of known facts “Getting what you came for” by Peters, R.L.

22 What is a Research Methodology
Answer: standardised approach to research philosophy common across all disciplines คือ การหาความรู้ความจริง มีการรวบรวมข้อมูล  จัดระเบียบข้อมูล วิเคราะห์และตีความหมายผลที่ได้จากการวิเคราะห์ “the acquisition of new knowledge” in terms of basic research, applied research, policy making.

23 What do the examiners expect?
Naked Truth..!! What do the examiners expect? what is this student's research question? is it a good question? (has it been answered before? is it a useful question to work on?) did the student convince me that the question was adequately answered? has the student made an adequate contribution to knowledge? “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

24 What should you provide?
Naked Truth..!! What should you provide? A thorough review of the existing literature on the subject, and on closely related subjects. Demonstrate that your question (a) has not been previously answered, and (b) is worth answering. Describing how you answered the question “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

25 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 1. Prologue: Introduction A general introduction to what the thesis is all about Briefly summarize the question (you will be stating the question in detail later) some of the reasons why it is a worthwhile question an overview of your main results “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

26 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 2. Background Information background information necessary, especially if your work deals with two or more traditional fields. Giving readers the experience with the material needed to follow your thesis Sometimes, given as theories “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

27 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 3. Review of the Literatures (State of the Art) review the previous publications relevant to your thesis To present (critical analysis comes a little bit later) the major ideas in the state of the art right up to, but not including, your own personal brilliant ideas. You organize this section by idea, and not by author or by publication “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

28 Note: Literature Search and Review
What approach have others used? Why are these approaches unsuitable? How is our problem different from those tackled by others? What can we learn from other approaches to similar problems? Or similar approaches to other problems?

29 Note: Literature Search and Review
Set our work into context. Avoid wasting effort when problem has already been solved. Controversial results may need to be checked. Extend and build on the work of others.

30 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 3. Review of the Literatures (State of the Art) Example in reviewing the state of the art in Zylon Algorithms if there have been three important main approaches to Zylon Algorithms to date organize subsections around these three approaches, if necessary: Iterative Approximation of Zylons Statistical Weighting of Zylons Graph-Theoretic Approaches to Zylon Manipulation “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

31 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 4. Research Question or Problem Statement "problem" to be solved or "question" to be answered: a concise statement of the question that your thesis tackles justification, by direct reference to section 3, that your question is previously unanswered discussion of why it is worthwhile to answer this question. “How to Organize your Thesis” by Chinnek, J.W.”

32 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton For example: Problem: "develop a Zylon algorithm capable of handling very large scale problems in reasonable time" (you would further describe what you mean by "large scale" and "reasonable time" in the problem statement). Analysis: how each class of current approaches fails (i.e. can handle only small problems, or takes too much time) Explain: why having a large-scale fast Zylon algorithm is useful; e.g., by describing applications where it can be used.

33 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 5. Describing How You Solved the Problem or Answered the Question Should be free-form. To convince the examiners that you answered the question or solved the problem So show what you did that is relevant to answering the question or solving the problem do not include blind alleys and dead ends, unless specifically relevant to the demonstration that you answered the thesis question.

34 how do you do research? main elements
acquire data/observations/facts/cases (empirical knowledge) acquire laws/principles/models/concepts (theoretical knowledge) main processes deduction: find a theory; test it with data associated with physical sciences, engineering often replicated in how the disciplines are taught induction: gather data; think of a theory associated with social sciences, humanities again sometimes replicated in teaching

35 What is a Research Methodology
SOME EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESEARCH experiment: one or more variables are manipulated and the results analyzed. survey-questionnaire: behaviors, beliefs and observations of specific groups are identified, reported and interpreted. status: a representative or selected sample of one or more phenomena is examined to determine its special characteristics. theory construction: an attempt to find or describe principles that explain how things work the way they do. trend analysis: predicting or forecasting the future direction of events.

36 What is a Research Methodology
SOME EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESEARCH analysis: classes of data are collected and studies conducted to discern patterns and formulate principles that might guide future action case study: the background, development, current conditions and environmental interactions of one or more individuals, groups, communities, businesses or institutions is observed, recorded and analyzed for stages of patterns in relation to internal and external influences. comparison: two or more existing situations are studied to determine their similarities and differences. correlation-prediction: statistically significant correlation coefficients between and among a number of factors are sought and interpreted. evaluation: research to determine whether a program or project followed the prescribed procedures and achieved the stated outcomes. design-demonstration: new systems or programs are constructed, tested and evaluated

37 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 6. Epilogue Contains Conclusions: short, concise statements of the inferences from your work, ordered from most to least important. should be directly related to the research question stated in Section 4

38 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 6. Epilogue Contains Summary of Contributions list the contributions of new knowledge that your thesis makes. Future Research for the benefit of researchers who pick up this work idea in future

39 Drawing Conclusions. What do I know now as a result of having done the work, which I did not know at the start of the project? Conclusion must be justified by arguments based on the experimental results or theoretical analysis. Drawing Conclusions is a good indication that the thesis can be written!

40 Future Work. The work has a defined duration and may pose questions as well as provide answers. Assess the wider significance of the conclusions and suggest more detailed/broader investigations. This may be work for other people.

41 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton For example Conclusions: The problem stated in Section 4 has been solved: as shown in Sections ? to ??, an algorithm capable of handling large-scale Zylon problems in reasonable time has been developed. The principal mechanism needed in the improved Zylon algorithm is the Grooty mechanism. Etc Summary of Contributions: Developed a much quicker algorithm for large-scale Zylon problems. Demonstrated the first use of the Grooty mechanism for Zylon calculations. Etc.

42 A Generic Thesis Skeleton
Naked Truth..!! A Generic Thesis Skeleton 7. References tied to the review 8. Appendices Any material which prohibits you from smooth presentation, but important to justify the results of a thesis

43 Overall model of a Research Project.
Starts broad with identification of other approaches. Narrows to a detailed investigation of a specific problem. Broadens to assess the wider significance of the work.

44 Thesis: Writing it “ Your manuscript is both good and original; but the part that is good is not original, and the part that is original is not good”

60 Selecting the Committee Lots of folks confuse bad management with destiny. -Kin Hubbard

61 Committee Duties To approve your thesis proposal
Judge the quality of your thesis and its defense (If they’d like) guide you in your research work

62 Avoid these: Conflicts between committee members
Conflicts between you and your committee members (including your adviser) Replacing or changing committee or adviser without appropriate reasons

63 Choosing Thesis Topic

64 Two ways of Choosing Thesis Topic
Choose if by yourself (in consultation with your adviser) Topic provided by your adviser Findings one: Reading theses and articles Attend seminars and conferences Use the professors and other graduate students Start research project

65 Criteria: Your interest “Hotness” Adviser’s enthusiasm for the topics
Existing of background information Narrow topic to be broadened Originality (Reviews) Tractable (Resources) Timeframe Funding

66 Ethics for Researchers

67 Ethics and Good Practices of Researching
Acknowledgement of previous work Willing to accept criticism Repeat Measurement: No bias in collection data; free from influences of researcher and any disturbances on Results communicated by in-person discussion, presentation in seminars, conferences, and publications in conference proceedings, disclosure in patents, formal publication in reviewed journals and books; Give credit to who publish it first and/or who discover it first.

68 Ethics and Good Practices of Researching
Name order in publication; 1st [ originator of the idea/ leader], no name added without prior permission Before publication, results belongs to researcher and/or funding agency according to mutual agreement Permission is required before being able to commercialize patented invention Great attention on detail of work presented in conference before publication as community might not catch flaws in results

69 Ethics and Good Practices of Researching
Acknowledgement on those who give advice/ info/ material/ financial support Reference for publication used Conflict of interest; favor and compettition Wrong info in publication needs correction on next publication Stealing the results is prohibited False data is dishonest
