In order to answer that we need to talk about metadata, data and information first.Metadata - Is Information describing the characteristics of data; data or information about data; descriptive information about an organization's data, data activities, systems, and holdings.Data - Important to KM, but when existing by itself, data provides no “judgement” or “interpretation” of events; it is strictly a representation of facts, concepts, or instructions in a formalized manner suitable for communication, interpretation, or processing by humans or by automatic means.Information - Information management is essential to KM. Information is the raw material for production of knowledge. It results when data becomes organized, patterned, grouped and/or categorized.EXPLICIT KNOWLEDGE is knowledge that can be codified and stored physically or electronically, stands on its own, is actionable and learnable. (Examples: lessons learned, analysis reports, summary documents, worksheets, etc.)C TACIT KNOWLEDGE is derived from a combination of experience, intellect, business acumen, intuition, and wisdom Residing in a person’s mind, it is difficult, if not impossible to capture and store externally. How well strategic objectives are achieved ultimately depends on our ability to harness and effectively manage these two types of knowledge.C Knowledge - Knowledge, then, is the understanding we gain through experience, observation or study. In short, knowledge is more meaningful information. Knowledge is information in context, enhanced with connectivity, judgement and intuition.
