Part 1 สะพานทอดตัวข้ามลำน้ำ ด้วยท่าทางที่แสนสบาย ด้วยมีสองฟากฝั่ง สะพานถูกนำมาสู่สายน้ำ และ ณ เชิงสะพานทั้งสอง ทางได้เปิดออกไป ออกไปสู่ดินแดนในเบื้องหน้า และเบื้องหลังนั้น สะพานได้นำสายน้ำสองฟากฝั่ง และดินแดนที่อยู่ใกล้เข้ามาชิดสนิทสนมกัน สะพานได้นำมาซึ่งการประชุมกันของพื้นดิน เกิดเป็นดินแดนขึ้นในถิ่นของสายน้ำนั้น สะพานยืนขึ้นเสมือนดังว่าเป็นผู้สั่งขับให้สายน้ำแล่นไหล ผ่านไปในเขตทุ่งหญ้าข้างหน้า มันยืนขึ้นและปล่อยให้สายน้ำเป็นอิสระ เมื่อไหลผ่านประตูโค้งของตัวมันไป สายน้ำก็จะได้อิสระ ท่องเที่ยวไกลออกไป สะพายปล่อยให้สายน้ำไหลผ่านไปตามทางของมัน และในขณะเดียวกันก็ปล่อยให้ชีวิตของเราผู้คน ได้ก้าวข้าม จากฝั่งหนึ่งไปสู่อีกฝั่งหนึ่ง ชั่วนาตาปี ทิพย์สุดา ปทุมานนท์, ปรากฎการณ์ศาสตร์ในสถาปัตยกรรม (กรุงเทพฯ : จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, 2540), หน้า 6

Phenomenology in Architecture
นักคิดที่ใช้กระบวนทัศน์นี้จะมองว่า พื้นที่ว่างที่เปิดตัวเองให้เรารับรู้นั้นไม่ใช่เป็นพื้นที่ว่างที่มีความเป็นนามธรรม ไม่ใช่เป็นพื้นที่ที่ปราศจากความตั้งใจให้เกิด แต่เป็นพื้นที่ที่เกิดขึ้นและรับรู้จากประสบการณ์ของการใช้ชีวิต การรับรู้ที่ว่านี้อาจจะไม่ได้รับรู้แต่เพียงมิติทาง กายภาพ แต่ยังรับรู้ถึงมิติต่างๆ ที่ถูกซ้อนเร้นหรือถูกบิดเบือน โดยเฉพาะจากวิทยาศาสตร์สมัยใหม่และการเกิดขึ้นของโลกสามมิติ ผลพวงที่ได้มาจากการเข้าสู่ยุคหลังสมัยใหม่นิยม การปะทะสังสรรค์กันระหว่างร่างกายและสภาพแวดล้อม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นทางสายตา การสัมผัส กลิ่น และเสียง ในความหมายของ การรับรู้ที่เกิดขึ้นกับสถาปัตยกรรม ภาพจากหนังสือ Experiencing Architecture Sense of Existence Sense of Being-in-the-world Sense of Belonging Sense of Place

To think of Phenomenology of Architecture is to help man get back to authentic dwelling
In short, to use Phenomenology as a method is to understand ‘the Production of Meaning’ outside the realm of Semiotics To study Phenomenology in architecture is to learn ‘how to create sensual space, feeling, make the sense of belonging’, enlarging opportunity for people to experience it. กระบวนการที่ซุมทอร์ใช้นั้น คือการ “กำกับประสบการณ์และอารมณ์ของคนที่เข้าไปในงานสถาปัตยกรรมของเขา” วิธีการกำกับของเขานั้นคล้ายกับการกำกับหนัง แต่ทว่าไม่ใช่แผ่นฟิลม์ที่เป็นสื่อของการกำกับ แต่เป็นที่ว่าง รูปทรงที่ห่อหุ้ม ผิวสัมผัสของวัตถุที่คนสัมผัส รวมถึงกลิ่นของวัสดุ การทำงานของซุมทอร์เน้นไปที่การสร้างประสบการณ์โดยอาศัยสถาปัตยกรรม และอาศัยผัสสะต่างๆ เพื่อกระตุ้นให้เกิดประสบการณ์นั้น สำหรับซุมทอร์แล้ว “กายภาพของวัสดุนั้น สามารถเปิดโอกาสให้เกิดการเชื่อมต่อระหว่างปัจเจกและโลก ปลุกเร้าประสบการณ์ และเอื้อให้เกิดการรับรู้ของบริบทของสถานที่นั้นโดยผ่านความทรงจำ”
